Puppets & Traditions Participants Needed

Puppets & Traditions Participants Needed

ICA is partnering with Lina de Guevara of Puente Theatre and master puppeteer Tim Gosley to present a series of puppet making workshops for immigrant and refugee newcomers. Enthusiasm and some experience in the arts are the most important requirements, as well as availability to attend Saturday afternoon and a few evening workshops in February and March.

The workshops will provide a safe and fun environment to learn how to make giant puppets that will reflect the immigrants’ unique cultures and incorporate their experiences as newcomers. There will be a public presentation on March 21 with music, a puppet procession and professional storytellers. The ten participants will receive an honorarium of $150.

The first workshop is on Friday Jan 29, 6-9pm. All are encouraged to attend to find out more about the project and to be considered as a participant. We will help fill out application forms at the workshop.

If you want to attend the workshop or have any questions, please contact Karin Scarth at ICA, kscarth@icavictoria.org or 250-388-4728 ext 129

BETWEEN @ ICA

BETWEEN @ ICA, the youth program that brings local and newcomer youth together, is still meeting on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-5:45pm here at ICA. We have been busy preparing for exams and planning for our next community project. Keep your eyes out for what these youth will be putting together in February and March!

Because we have lots of fantastic youth volunteers, we are now offering one-to-one tutoring. If you know a youth (12-22 years old) who would benefit from quality help working on homework, or particular school subjects, please contact Leanna and we’ll get a tutoring partnership set up.

Please drop by or give Leanna a call or email at 250.388.4728 ext 125 or lplatt@icavictoria.org

BETWEEN @ ICA is for newcomer (immigrant and refugee) and local youth from 12-20 years old. Held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:45-5:45 at ICA.

Profile of a Mentorship

Profile of a Mentorship

Thomas, Mentor, and Robert, Mentee

Thomas, a local venture capitalist and founder and CEO of Mad Ventures, Inc., is a very active figure within ICA. He mentored several immigrant professionals prior to Robert and has now moved on to mentor yet another individual. He is also a member of our Board of Directors as of this year, and even so, every time I see him waiting to pick up his wife from ESL classes, he tells me, “Feel free to throw another mentee at me if you have one!”

Robert, formerly a Department Manager in an IT company, is a go getter! Since arriving to Canada in 2007, he has managed to complete his MBA at UVic, develop a business model and apply for a provisional patent, and, most recently, land a job with the Federal Government as a Management Systems Auditor all while raising a small child on his own. Wow!

Together, the two make a great team, and through their mentorship, they have formed a very strong friendship. As Thomas says, “I really feel that the relationship I’ve developed with Robert will truly last a lifetime.”

In addition to making a new friend, both men feel that they have benefited greatly from the mentorship. One of Thomas’ great goals is to put Victoria on the global technology map. “I can’t do this alone,” he says, “and it makes me feel good that great people like Robert will be in Victoria and helping out to make my dream possible.” He also feels that he benefited greatly from learning about Robert’s perspectives in approaching business and networking as well as about his life philosophies.

Robert really appreciated Thomas’ open communication, warmth, and encouragement. “One thing I learned from Thomas is to THINK POSITIVELY, which really changed my style of thinking,” he says. Thomas also had a profound affect on Robert’s career plan. “Now,” he says, “I really plan to do non-profit work in future to help other new immigrants.”

As Thomas so nicely put it, “I’m sure we have a future mentor in Robert!”

Like Thomas, you too can make a difference in an immigrant's life! ICA is always looking for professionals in a variety of fields to be mentors.

Please contact Karolien Swaak, Host Mentoring Services Facilitator, 250-388-4728 ext 122 or kswaak@icavictoria.org for more information.

Introducing Practicum Student Rebecca Schmidt-Poskitt

Introducing Practicum Student Rebecca Schmidt-Poskitt

Becky is a student at Camosun College in her third and final year, working towards a diploma in Community, Family and Child Studies. She decided to take the program because supporting others, teaching and learning from others is important to her. She has previous experience working in human services through volunteer work at Our Place as well as practicum experience with Kardel Consulting Services doing individual support as well as being part of an advocacy group for individuals with developmental disabilities.

Becky is really happy about her placement at ICA and looks forward to the experience over the next couple months. She believes it is nice to test different grounds because at the moment she is not sure where she would like to take her career. She has a bit of travel experience and exploring new countries and cultures is an interest of hers. So far, she's visited places like Mexico, Hawaii, and much of Europe--and looks forward to expanding this list. Otherwise, in her spare time she loves to garden, grow her own fruits and vegetables, cook, and spend time outside.

Becky will be working with ICA's youth, seniors and women during her placement, and will be with us until April. Welcome to ICA!

Call for cultural entertainers and food vendors

The North Park Neighbourhood Association is planning our first annual International Cultural and Food Festival – the NORTH PARK NOSH, a family event featuring food and entertainment from cultural associations from around the community. The event date is to be announced, but will take place sometime in late May or early June 2010, with a proposed running time of 12 noon – 7pm.

Currently we are putting out the call for cultural associations that would like to get involved as food vendors, entertainers, or both.

The NPNA will not be commissioning revenues from food sales, so there will be a three-tiered fee system for participants to cover costs:

- Groups that provide a food booth and entertainment will pay (a small fee).
- Groups that provide a food booth only will pay (a larger fee)
- An honorarium will be paid to those that provide entertainment only

We are hoping to have 8 to 10 food vendors participate, so in the event that we receive more applications than can be accommodated, preference will be given to groups that can provide both food and entertainment, followed by those with a close proximity to North Park while ensuring a variety of cultures are represented.

Basic infrastructure and civic license fees will be provided by NPNA.

An informational meeting for interested parties will be held in late February, please email events@npna.ca if you wish to attend or for more information.
